The Vietnam Veterans is highly rated among many European fans. I found
their debut LP to be of interest, but not of the earth-shattering stature that
I had been led to believe. I haven't seen or heard any of their other
considerable output. So rather than leave you with what some would think is a
lukewarm assessment, I'll let the band itself share their attitude from the
liner notes of their debut On The Right Track Now LP: "This is
what rock'n'roll is when it's played by the right people, not 'musicians' but
human beings. The V.V.s are bored by most of the neo-garage bands. Psychedelia
ain't a fuckin' dance craze, folks! It's a fuckin' way of life! Did you ever
take a real fuckin' trip in your life? What do you believe in? You're just
fuckin' squares, kids. ... The Vietnam Veterans just don't care about styles.
They'd be psychedelic even if they'd play tango.”
There’s nothing I can add to that. As the Veterans would say, “flash
on!” (Timothy Gassen)
