First volume in a new series 'The Knight Of Fuzz', in which the best
bands of the 80's garage scene will get their full output compiled on
CD. THE OTHERSIDE were pioneers of the Dutch garage scene releasing 2
(now impossible to find) EP's. Guitarist Marcel Kruup went on to greater
things in bands like THE KLIEK and TREBLE SPANKERS. -Source
This anthology collects everything from the Otherside's two EPs and
compilation appearances, as well as adding half a dozen previously unreleased
live songs. When a 1960s garage revival CD kicks off with an especially anemic
version of the Yardbirds' classic
"Heart Full of Soul," the heart in fact sinks in anticipation of
music that fails to live up to its predecessors even more than most revival
recordings do. And when the Otherside take on both
classic and obscure 1960s covers, as they do on about half of this CD, the
results are indeed disheartening facsimiles of the originals, lacking in
tightness, authority, and of course originality. Sometimes they don't seem to
have learned, or bothered to learn, the correct chord changes for some of the
most challenging passages. Fortunately, there's modest compensation in that the
group wrote not-bad original tunes that, unlike most of their garage revival peers,
drew heavily from the British Invasion. It's refreshing to hear a more
pop-inclined slant to this genre, which usually goes right for the Chocolate Watch Band/Standells/Sonics/Seeds vibe and treats deviation
from those inspirations as treason. It still sounds pretty weedy, though, down
to the thin sitar sound on "Puppy Dog."
