The Evil Thingies - New Shapes In Sound 10'' (Tear It Up Records 2002)

Face it, mister King Koen never gives up! After his band Bonedaddy and his work for The Ewings he now found the time to put up The Evil Thingies. Call it super fuzz garage punk a go go, or call it the nu-psychedelic sixties rock trip to The Chesterfield Kings, The Lyres, Miracle Workers and The Fuzztones. New Shapes In Sound contains a collection of ten soon to be classics on perfect white vinyl and in the best sound you can get. Mono that is.    -René Vanes

Wow! It’s been since the Strollers and the last Satelliters LP that I have experienced such a great pure garage punk LP! The Evil Thingies are from Belgium and Koen Goossens is involved in here! He plays the fuzz and screams loudly and nasty! The album begins with two aggressive garage punk and quick tunes that will make you sweat. “I’ll Make You Pay” which opens the album, reminds me of The Pikes In Panik style (on the LP). Fast, furious, wild! Farfisa and fuzz are in every tune! “Enough Of Your Lies” is this true, authentic garage punk tune you will love from the first note. The “Lies” subject is my fave theme on the lyrics on every song and this one is a scorer! “Gotta Get A Grip” will be released as A Side on a forthcoming 45 by the Thingies and is on the same root as the two first two songs. Loud and fast. I would love to see the Evil Thingies live, as I believe that they would make a club go really wild and shaking all around. This one has harp too. The album’s A side finishes with Outside/Inside, a mid tempo garage punk stomper that reminds of Yard Trauma (always something reminds of something, okay, but I don’t mean that any band try to sound like any other but that’s a way to explain what I get from what I listen to). B-side starts with an instro titled “It’s A Thingie! Ok, here is Blue’s Theme in disguise, but who’s that, who doesn’t wanna shake to that beat of the pounding drums?! And then…follows the highest time of the album! THEE WYLDEST AND MEANEST! “Hung Up On You” is this, yeah! Mean garage punk! The next song is in the same style and then comes a powerful RnB tune titled “I’ll Make You Pay” with lotsa harp and fuzz. In the end comes “I Can Only Give You Everything”, the all time fave song of Koen Goossens. Check out links pages to visit his site for this song. The whole LP is splendid. I don’t think that there is more to write than tell you straight: Go Now & Get That Piece Of Wax Or Give Up Listening To Garage Punk Tunes For Good!  10 out of 10!    -Source
